Last Tuesday, October 13th, 2020, the West Jefferson Roughrider boys’ soccer team (6-8) had their last home game against the Bishop Ready Silver Knights (3-7).
Up to date, the Roughriders have scored 53 goals on the season, however, the Silver Knights had only scored 19 goals. Each team had over 60 goals scored against them.
As the Roughriders were attempting to try and finish the regular season with an even .500 record, the Silver Knights came for a fight.
In the first half, the score was 4-2. The Silver Knights, however, were going into halftime with an advantage since they scored the last two goals of the half.
The second half began with the Silver Knights rushing down the field to take an early goal.
The Roughriders, however, responded with two quick goals which resulted in more defensive play by the Roughriders to protect their 6-3 lead.
The final score of the West Jefferson vs. Bishop Ready boys’ soccer game was 6-4, led by top scorer Juan Santiago, who had 3 goals.
Earlier in the week, both teams learned that they would face one another in the first round of the OHSAA Boys Soccer Tournament.
Game Day, Part 17; Thursday, October 22nd, 5:00pm start time. West Jefferson High School at Bishop Ready High School: The Rematch.
In field regulations, the Silver Knights’ have a small, but playable field. With the rain that occurred for days prior, the field was supersaturated.
The Roughriders arrived 25 minutes before the game because their bus was 35 minutes late. Therefore, the Roughriders were out of routine.
The game began and the Silver Knights ran away with the game. The Roughriders could not control the ball down the field. The Silver Knights scored their first goal within the first 10 minutes of play, and they scored another right before halftime.
West Jefferson couldn’t execute any halftime game changes due to Santiago’s recent ankle injury that occurred in the first game against the Silver Knights.
The game ended at 6:36pm and the final score was 3-0 for Bishop Ready.
The Roughriders were led by captains, AJ Hymiller, Nash Parsons, and Aiden Clerico.
The views of sun-setting, sweat dripping, slow-paced walking, and holding tears were on the faces of the West Jefferson team as they slowly returned to the bus and traveled 25 minutes home, where their season was officially over.
