“I think Jose knows how we feel about him,” Manager Terry Francona openly said.

All-star third basemen, Jose Ramirez, agreed to a 5-year, $124 million extension with the Cleveland Guardians (formerly known as the Indians). This comes as the ownership of the Guardians has been criticized for not spending enough money on their players.

Ramirez’s first contract was for only $24 million. This contract extension is by far the biggest that the Guardians has ever proposed, as it was one of five teams to never agree on a $100 million or more contract with a player. The highest contract in MLB is Mike Trout, Los Angeles Angels, for $426.5 million for 12 years.

Ramirez had a meeting with Peter Dolan, owner of the Guardians, and told Dolan that he wanted to spend his entire career with the Guardians. However, if these talks were not done, it was likely that Ramirez would have been potentially traded to the San Diego Padres or New York Yankees, which included higher wages.

“I think Jose knows how we feel about him,” manager Terry Francona openly said. Francona expects to use Ramirez as the third batter in the order, as Ramirez is the only position player left from Cleveland’s 2016 championship tier team, which lost in the World Series in seven games.

The Guardians are not expected to officially announce this deal for several day, as the finance organization must work on structuring the deal.

Signed in 2009 as an international free agent and a shortstop, Ramirez has finished in the top three of the American League MVP voting three times and finished sixth in 2021.

The first game for the 2022 season will be at the Kansas City Royals on Thursday, April 7, 2022, with the first pitch starting at 4:10 p.m. The Guardians home opener at Progressive Field against the San Francisco Giants takes place Friday, April 15, 2022, with the first pitch at 7:10 p.m.
